Link building: authority that survives an audit
Editorial links, press relations, citations. One theme per link, durable, verifiable one by one. No bulk buying, no private site networks: the kind of authority that also carries your citations in AI engines. Every domain is validated by hand, and you see the target list before anything is placed.
What is link building?
Link building is the work of earning and maintaining links from other websites to yours, so that search engines and AI engines treat your brand as a source worth citing. At Botanik it covers editorial links, press relations and citations, selected by hand and verified one by one.
A link has value under three conditions. It sits inside real content, not a directory listing. The host site's subject overlaps with yours. And it holds over time. A placement that fails any of these three tests is a cost, not an asset, and an audit will eventually say so.
Links are also the raw material generative engines use to decide which sources to quote. Press that cites you is readable by ChatGPT and Perplexity the same way it is readable by Google. That makes link building a direct lever in a GEO engagement: the engines cite sources, and being inside those sources is the work.
The page title is a promise. Authority that survives an audit means a profile that holds up when a competitor, an engine, or a due diligence team inspects it link by link. Three commitments frame every engagement: every domain is validated by hand and never bought in bulk, the list of target domains reaches you before any placement, and every link we place is re-verified over time, then replaced if it disappears. A link profile audit is offered free of charge before any commitment.
The four signals that bring companies here
Your backlink profile is dominated by directories with no traffic and no thematic focus. They add volume, not authority, and they give an engine nothing worth citing.
Competitors outrank you with less content but more credible referring domains. The difference is not what they publish. It is who links to them.
The share of exact-match anchors in your profile sits outside the natural distribution of your sector. That pattern reads as manipulation, and it is measurable.
Not one link comes from the publications that carry weight in your sector. The outlets that engines treat as reference sources do not know you exist.
Four warning signs push a company toward link building work: a profile dominated by directories, competitors overtaking you with stronger referring domains, over-optimized anchors, and zero press coverage. The profile audit puts a number on all four points before a single placement is made.
What we do, in practice
Your link profile set against the top 5 sites for your main query: quality, diversity, toxicity. You see exactly where the gap is, and how wide.
Placements inside real content, on themed sites that receive actual traffic. The content is written for the host site, never recycled from a template.
The publications that count in your sector, including the ones generative engines quote as sources. A press mention is a citation that Google and ChatGPT can both read.
A brand and generic anchor ratio held steady over time. Never a series of exact-match anchors, because that distribution is the first thing an audit flags.
We remove what weighs you down and keep what carries you. No mass disavow, ever: each link to cut is named individually, with the reason.
Every link is re-verified after placement, and replaced if it disappears or switches to nofollow. What we place, we track.
The link building service covers six workstreams: an authority audit, editorial links, press relations and citations, managed anchors, surgical disavow, and monitoring of every link placed. Each one is scoped after the audit, and each placement is verifiable individually, domain by domain.
How we work
The engagement runs in three stages: audit, select, maintain. You see the numbers before we propose anything, you see the target domains before we contact anyone, and you see a monthly report on every link after it goes live. Nothing is placed on trust alone.
- 01AuditWe quantify your profile and your competitors' before proposing anything. Referring domains are scored on traffic, theme and history. Your anchor distribution is compared with your sector's. Links to remove are identified one by one.Deliverable : The list of target domains, submitted to you before any outreach begins.
- 02SelectSelection is done by hand, never through link packages. The content is written for the host site, not a recycled text. Anchors are varied and agreed with you in advance.Deliverable : Placements in real content, on themed sites with real traffic.
- 03MaintainA link profile is a living thing: what gets placed gets checked and, when needed, replaced. Every placed link is controlled periodically. Links that disappear or lose value are replaced, at no extra charge.Deliverable : A monthly report, domain by domain.
What an audit finding looks like
The authority chapter of the Graine (Seed) audit report uses the same format as every other chapter: a quantified finding, its severity, its fix. The two rows below illustrate the template with example values, not client data. Yours come out of your own audit.
| Finding | Severity | Measured | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toxic referring domains | High | 22% of the profile | Targeted disavow, then replacement with editorial links on the same themes |
| Exact-match anchors | Moderate | 1 anchor in 3 | Dilution with brand and generic anchors on upcoming placements |
Does link building work for AI engines?
Yes, and one number says why: in 2026, 38% of Google's top 10 results get cited as sources in AI Overviews, down from 76% in 2025. Ranking well no longer guarantees citation. Being present in the sources the engines actually quote is what does.
The sources a generative engine quotes are pages published somewhere other than your own site: comparison pages, sector and local press, authority directories, Wikipedia, Reddit, LinkedIn. Placing your brand in those sources is one of the four stages of the Botanik method. Link building is how that placement happens: a press article that cites you is machine-readable evidence, for Google and for the engines alike.
The effect is measurable. The Oracle audit replays up to 5,000 weighted prompts and scores your brand Absent, Mentioned or Recommended, engine by engine. If a placement moves you from Absent to Mentioned on a buying question, you see it in the monthly report. First citations typically move within 6 to 10 weeks. A durable shift from Mentioned to Recommended plays out over 4 to 6 months.
This page covers the authority lever. For the full measurement method, corpus and scoring included, read the Oracle specification (/en/oracle-method). For how link building slots into a complete engagement, start from the GEO agency page (/en/generative-engine-optimization-agency).
Link profiles we have already worked on
We worked with Ebay on the SEO of its product pages. The result: +95% organic traffic, +38% clicks to products, and +22% average basket value on key categories.
With Botanik, CybelAngel deployed cybersecurity-focused content and a niche link building strategy, building organic reputation on a technical B2B market.
Two examples from the case study library. Ebay came for product page SEO and gained 95% more organic traffic. CybelAngel built B2B authority in cybersecurity with targeted content and niche link building. Each case is published, with the work behind it.
Do you buy links?
We pay for editorial placements, and we tell you which ones: the list of target domains reaches you before placement, with each domain's traffic and theme. We do not buy bulk packages, and we do not use any private network of sites we own.
What happens if a link disappears?
It is caught at the periodic check and replaced, at no extra charge. That is the counterpart of placing few links and tracking every one of them.
How many links per month?
The number depends on your sector and on the domains genuinely within reach, not on a quota. We do not publish a typical volume: a figure announced in advance pushes an agency to place what is available rather than what is relevant.
Does this also help with AI engines?
Yes. The sources a generative engine quotes are pages published somewhere other than your own site. A sector press article that cites you is readable by those engines exactly as it is by Google. The Oracle audit measures whether you appear in their answers, engine by engine.
Who will actually work on my account?
A senior consultant, always: 100% seniors, zero juniors. Your account is never handed to a junior or subcontracted. The people who select the domains are the people you talk to.
Is link building enough on its own?
No. Authority amplifies what already exists. On a broken technical base or missing content, it has nothing to amplify. That is why the audit covers the full picture first, and why link building usually runs alongside content and technical work.
What does the link building audit cost?
The Graine (Seed) audit is priced at €2,670, from 3 days of consulting, delivered in 3 weeks. It benchmarks your link profile against the top 5 sites for your main query, names every link to disavow one by one, and lists the press opportunities in your sector.
Every price is public and built on a single day rate of €890, whatever the volume. If you continue into an ongoing program, Pousse or Canopée (our growth and multi-market tiers), within 60 days, the audit fee is deducted from your first month. All prices exclude VAT.
For the full price grid, the variable fee share and what each tier includes, see what a GEO agency costs (/en/what-a-geo-agency-costs). For the scoring behind the Absent, Mentioned and Recommended states, the Oracle specification is published in full (/en/oracle-method).
You get the list of domains before anything is placed. That is the rule this whole service is built on. Book the audit, or start with a conversation: 30 minutes with a consultant, free.
